Celebrating Heritage

Why is 18th April World Heritage Day celebrated?
The day is observed to raise awareness about the cultural heritage that we see around us. It is also aimed at promoting historical monuments and sites through which we can actually preserve the cultural integrity of a community as well.
What is Cultural heritage?
Any Tangible or Intangible asset which reflects rich culture, inherited from the past, which needs to be valued enough for today, to leave for future generations. Cultural heritage is the heritage of tangible and intangible heritage assets of a group or society that is inherited from past generations.

1. Tangible heritage:
The term Tangible heritage refers in general to all the material traces such as archaeological sites, historical monuments, artifacts, and objects that are significant to a community, a nation, or/and humanity.

2. Intangible heritage:
Intangible heritage consists of nonphysical intellectual wealth, such as folklore, customs, beliefs, traditions, knowledge, and language which reflects the rich culture.

What is the Role of an Architect to save heritage?
1. To raise Awareness regarding the importance of heritage.
2. Learning the methods and techniques to Preserve, Conserve or Restore the heritage.
3. To define a policy that maintains the Heritage of the area.
4. To grade the structure and maintain them accordingly.
5. To find the alternative way of self-sustaining or making adaptive re-use of the building.
6. To demark the neighborhood or heritage precinct.
7. To make dossiers, Mapping, and tagging the relevant tangible and intangible heritage.
8. To flourish the lost or soon-to-be-lost heritage via various policies or schemes.

How to start?
• Start with your own house, family, or storage room. Find the Tangible and Intangible Heritage and try to restore them. Make a note of dates, Years, values, and conditions and map the importance.
• Explore your own neighborhood and area for heritages. Neighborhood or street names can give a lot of clues regarding its history.
• Make a map and explore heritage of your own city, on weekends or whenever convenient. Share and save this documentation.
• Heritage can be the geography of the area, Old tree, temple, or just a Street name. have your eyes for heritage.
• Sketch or make note of such place.
• Check older maps or ask locals regarding the same.
• While visiting another city, do your own research, visit city museums and older parts of the City to understand the evolution of the place.
• Read books and attend seminars.
• Pass the knowledge and create awareness in your relative, juniors, friend circle etc.
