What is Architecture for Architects?
Being an Architect, is a prestigious prefix to Identity of self. Most of the aspirants planning to pursue Architecture and sometimes even I wonder ‘What really is Architecture?’ Architecture is often defined as a combination of Art and Science. Being art, it provides us an outlet for creative expression. It also allows the society to view, create and shape their environment and living space in a unique way.
Being science, architecture deals with our functional needs, providing us living space and environment that is functionally efficient as well as comfortable. Thus we can infer, Architecture is the art and science of designing the ambient built environment around us. At a Macro scale it includes the total built environment of town planning, urban design and landscape architecture, to the micro level of construction details, interior design and sometimes furniture.
Architecture is primarily driven by the holistic creative management of mass, space, volume, texture, light, shadow, materials, program, and practical logistics, such as cost, construction and technology in order to achieve an end which is aesthetic, functional and artistically appealing. This is the factor that primarily differentiates Architecture from engineering design which is usually driven by hardcore application of mathematical and scientific logic.
Architecture is the physical manifestation of a creative concept or idea. This idea can be innovation of construction system, or the way people use a building or adaptation of the built form into physical or a social landscape. There is no one-size-fits all approach in architecture. Each building project demands a unique response to context: site, climate, social, budget and materials.
Buildings need to age well, that is to have inherent flexibility to adapt with the changing requirements and ability to accommodate various needs of the user. The built forms also have a responsibility to be sustainable, both with materials used during construction and the consumption of energy resources to function efficiently.
As an Architect, I have always wondered why architecture is so important for the society we live in? Architecture not only provides us with the physical environment, we live in, but also is a deep expression of human civilization era.
Architecture that endures and survives beyond us, acts as monuments, that future generations, study and strive to understand. Architecture often serve us as a time capsule of human history. It reveals human thoughts, ideals, ideas, even our fears and worries. All human emotions and thoughts can be reflected in one powerful piece of art, manifested as a built form that we can watching, in awe. Architecture in one and many ways is the direct reflection of our culture, who we are and where we belong within the society.
Every human intervention or built form is Architecture. Each and every building: home, school, office, hospital and supermarket, parks, gardens, public plazas towns, cities were designed for their particular purpose. It is of vital that these buildings with the environment, form neighborhoods and in turn shape our cities, are designed to be the best possible buildings for their specific context, and meet the requirements of the user. Thanks to modern technology, the boundaries of architecture are constantly intensifying and new wonders can be made every day.
Ideally, when creating their work, an architect must always incorporate all the functional and aesthetical aspects in their building design. All architects represent a great force in our society because architecture is an expression of the strengths of the society as well as their technological progress. Architecture is a form of visual art that creates an irrevocable work. Human value in this is high because it’s a permanent expression of the society values, desires, ideas, ways of thinking, ideologies and many other things in a fixed point of time. It is like a reflection in the mirror, a way society sees itself as well as how it sees the environment, nature and finally this world.
