Career in Sustainable Architecture...

‘A house is a machine for Living in’ …………    Le Corbusier

Buildings, especially the ones we use today can be construed as complicated machines. Optimizing their performance can ensure enhanced comfort for the inhabitants and reduce life cycle cost. Sustainable architecture is concerned with continuous depletion of resources, but it is not the only natural resource which is at risk. Other qualitative characteristics such as landscape, heritage, history, comfort and capability of urban areas to provide safety, health and enjoyment are also at risk. The aim has to be preserving the overall characteristics and quality of the environment. The term "sustainability" with the term “sustainable development" is widely used in economic, environmental, or social development issues. According to the current views, "sustainable architecture" not only provides the present generation’s need but also tries to preserve the needs of future generations as well.
“Sustainable Architecture is a development which provides the current needs without compromising the ability of future generations in achieving their needs and demands."

Scope of Sustainable Architecture
This can be achieved by making provisions for efficient usage of resources in built environment, balancing economic and environmental issues to create least burden on the natural environment. This course focuses on efficient practices of various services implemented in buildings with high ratings. One can work in various domains like environment architect, green building consultant & auditor, in government domains to prepare various polices.

Eligibility Requirements for Admission to Architecture in India:
HSC in Science Stream, with 50% Aggregate and 50% Aggregate in PCM.
Qualifying Entrance Exam: NATA or JEE-Paper II

Basics of sustainability covered in Architecture
The basic syllabus of architecture incorporates environment related subjects like environmental science where the students get exposure to climate responsive architecture, sustainability and also learn how to incorporate sustainable measures in their design. The course focuses on Concepts of Sustainable Building which includes topic like Energy Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Material Efficiency, Solid Waste Management etc. The last semester also deals with urban sustainability, post occupancy evaluation of buildings and impacts of built environment on its surroundings. The fundamentals of sustainability taught in the course act as robust base for pursuing full-fledged career in this field after graduation.
Who can be a Sustainable Architect?
Students joining this specialization are trained architects, often with considerable work experience. This specialization becomes an opportunity to reflect, discover new design processes or explore new trajectories outside of the exigencies of professional practice. In that respect, the specialization offers a unique opportunity to return to unhindered but well-structured design exploration which focus more on the life cycle analysis, Reducing Energy Loads and thus reducing annual energy cost and capital cost of buildings systems, ensuring thermal comfort and air quality, ensuring visual comfort and overall well-being by designing for adequate daylight and view to the outside.
The program offers student-architects the means to use their knowledge and insight to better respond to expanding the field of architecture and design in meaningful ways.
Candidates who have Bachelor's degree in Architecture / Planning (B.Arch / Planning) are eligible to pursue this course.
Demand in the industry today for Architects with sustainability training
Demand for sustainable buildings is increasing in the market day by day. There is a major demand for architects with sustainability training for urban planning projects and real estate projects. It is the ongoing trend that is likely to continue for all real estate projects to focus on building design and construction that lessens the impact of urban development on the environment. Developers get government incentives for designing sustainable projects that require less land development, use more environmentally friendly materials and are more energy efficient. Sustainable architecture stands on a few well-established elements such as orientation, natural ventilation, shading, and sunlight which help to get good rating for the buildings from different green building certification bodies IGBC, GRIHA & LEED.
Surely we as architects have a great responsibility to pass on to our future generations and create a healthy habitable place to live in …………….
