Career in Landscape Architecture

Why to choose a career in landscape Architecture…A Dialogue
All man-made interventions are an augmentation in the Natural environment. A right balance needs to be struck between the Intervention and Nature. To soften the boundaries and effect of such interventions, often landscape is used as a tool be it small additions of planters in the built environment or green spaces in the context of the City. These interventions not only add to visual relief, but also contribute in generating a micro-climate that heals the habitat and its inhabitants. The rich mix of open and enclosed spaces, introduction of plant material that allows biodiversity to thrive acts as a catalyst in enriching the environment.

Architecture arouses sentiments in man. The architect task is to make those sentiments more precise: Adolf Loos

Think of iconic green spaces in India like Sanjay Gandhi National park in Mumbai or gardens of Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. Take any community park or any local park of your neighborhood, your own backyard or green roof, urban farms,  office campus or college campus green space all are different forms of landscaped designs. Any building is appreciated more if it has a well thought of landscaped area surrounding it. Buildings without surrounding landscaped areas come across as mundane or dead built forms.
Landscape architecture combines art and architecture. It is the profession that teaches us how to manage our lands. Landscape architecture can plan and design a variety of spaces ranging from traditional places such as parks, residential developments, campuses, gardens, cemeteries, commercial centers, resorts, transportation corridors, corporate and institutional centers and waterfront development and many more.

A Bit of a Glimpse into the History - Journey from the birth of Landscape Architecture till today

The actual term Landscape Architecture became more common after 1863 when Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed New York's Central Park. Today, landscape architects deal with the increasingly complex relationships between the built and natural environment.

They also design and plan the restoration of natural places disturbed by humans such as wetlands, stream corridors, mined areas, forested lands etc. Their appreciation for historic landscapes and cultural resources enables landscape architects to undertake preservation and conservation planning projects for national, regional and local historic sites and areas.

Demand for Landscape Professionals
Working with architects, city planners, civil engineers and other professionals, landscape architects play an important role in environmental protection by designing and implementing projects that respect both the needs of people and of our environment.

Meeting human needs by making wise use of our environmental resources is work that is in demand today and will continue to be needed in the future. Fulfilling this need for future generation is a demand which landscape architect fulfills.
